THE VICAR’S REFLECTIONS ON HIS RETREAT
Last month I went on Retreat to St Beuno’s Jesuit Spirituality Centre in North Wales - my third visit to this evocative place where Gerard Manley Hopkins, a Jesuit priest, wrote many of his most treasured poems. Here’s a short reflection:
‘A green, vibrant, beautiful place – even in the rain!
What will grow in me during this Retreat?
The ‘sleeping Christ’ is one of the sculptures –
I come to rest in Him, to be still in Him,
to be fed by Him, to be challenged by Him.
Its a place of welcome – all traditions and no questions asked.
Welcome says my prayer guide – and she really means it.
Here love bids me welcome and calls me by my name:
I draw back aware of my weaknesses and flaws of character,
the times I’ve hurt God, hurt others and hurt myself.
Yet in Jesus love draws ever nearer and asks me who I am.
Soiled I may be, weary I may be, fearful I may be
but I discover afresh in the searching silence:
I’m a child of God, I’m his Beloved and precious to Him.
My desires are not hidden and
He knows my past, my present and my future.
He offers to wash me clean and make me new –
and I ask Him for a new heart and a new spirit.
Friday morning we draw to a close – bags are packed,
We have a Travellers’ Eucharist and speak again.
Yet the journey towards wholeness is far from over.
Its still work in progress, so I pray:
Lord Jesus, take me by the hand and guide my path.
Help me to put down deeper roots into your love.
Show me how to embody your welcome and your grace. Amen.
OPEN CHURCH MISSION WEEK - 23RD to 30TH JUNE
Please use this prayer daily:
Lord God, this week as we open the doors of our church life to welcome both friend and stranger, we pray for the community in which our church lies.
We pray for peace on its streets and in its homes.
We pray for kindness between neighbours and healing where there is pain and hurt.
We pray that every child, woman and man will feel loved and accepted.
We pray that each one will know your great love for them and your saving grace.
Open the hearts of the people of this community.
By your Spirit give them boldness to come and find out more about Jesus, our Lord and Saviour that their lives may be refreshed and transformed.
This week we place this community, our church and our hopes into your hands. Amen.
Come, taste and see!
